After the very well-received work “in g” borngräber & strüver have not been resting on their laurels but made “Reise” (journey). They extended the concept of “21st century electro motoric kraut” on the new album “Urlaub” and added their preference for disco music. Like a friend of the label said: “- Reise – sounds like a composition for the 20th birthday of Carl Craig’s Planet E “.
borngräber & strüver have consistently worked on developing their minimalist compositions without taking into consideration conventions. The nearly 17-minute “Reise” that starts extremely held back, grows into a groovy trip you can hardly escape. “berlin tribal music” has a radically minimalist approach and a surprising break like a portal to a parallel dimension. The last part of the album “dancing queen” has nothing to do with ABBA. The piece is a missing link between electronic h-pop and groovy club sounds.

Bei Musik sieht man oftmals Orte vor dem ineren Auge. Berghain, Ibiza, Plastic People. Bei Borngräber & STrüver drängt sich unweigerlich der Düsseldorfer Salon des Amateurs auf, wo das Krude, Experimentelle und Krautige einen festen Platz zwischen den Bassdrumblaupausen hat. Der ertse Track "Reise" ist so ein Beispiel. Episch mit 17 Minuten Länge, zwischen Jam und Craig'scher Dramatik, dennoch mit einem treibenden Groove, der den Fokus nicht verliert. Ein weiteres Highlight ist mit Sicherheit der dritte Track "Dancing Queen". Ein einnehmender, äußertst breiter discoider Slowjammer mit einfachem, aber effektiven Arpeggio. Having recently dropped that essential reissue of Conrad Schnitzler's Ballet Statique, M=minimal serve up a fresh set from modern day kraut standard-bearers Borngraber & Struver. "Kosmische" these days tends to be shorthand for fluffy synth ambience, but B&S invoke the more rhythmic, pulsation-prone practitioners of 70s German electronic music, and more power to 'em for it. 'Reise' is a hugely satisying 21st century update of Schnitzler et al's sleek machine minimalism, sweeping Blade Runner synths and dubbed-out piano chords underscored by a robust techno kick - building to a truly intense denoument ,you could see this jam going down a treat on the dancefloors of the world's deeper, darker club spots. 'Berlin Tribal Music' sounds like Neubauten and Swans soundtracking a Michael Mann chase scene, while 'Dancing Queen' is thumping, mid-paced disco-prog with an unbelievable thump, up-down arpeggios and swampy strings - wonderfully over-the-top, like Goblin if they'd made it in Hollywood. And with so many artists who share B&S's interests favouring a lo-fi idiom, it's refreshing to hear music so unashamedly crisp, full-bodied and frankly state-of-the-art in its production values. Recommended.

Das neue Werk des Berliner Duos, Borngräber & Strüver nimmt uns mit in den "Urlaub". Und hierfür sollte man sich in der Tat Zeit nehmen, denn das ganze Album hat nur drei Tracks, die sich allerdings fast unendlich ausdehnen. "Reise" fängt verhalten abern dennoch schon recht hypnotisch an. EIn Beat treibt stetig weiternach vorne, ohne eine besondere Unruhe aufkommen zu lassen. Nach und nach schleichen sich in den elektronischen Apparat krautartige Elemente ein, die in verschiedenen Ebenen herumwabern und schlisslich den Beat ausstechen. "Berolin Tribal Music" schleicht minutenlang als Fragmentarium durch die Peripherie und "Dancing Queen" peitscht sich durch tiefe Beats und ein sanftes Elektronikagewand. Sehr psychedelische Angelegenheit. 4/6
